What should I get, a vibrator or a dildo?

People who are new at the sex toy world may be a little confused by their first visit to a sex shop or sex toy website because there are so many items to choose from. Words like vibrator, rabbit, vibration ring, etc.  appear on flashy banners, without too much explanation of their differences. Vibrator and dildo, both are the most common types, are often mistakenly considered synonyms, but they are not the same. Let’s see where they’re alike and where they’re different.

So what’s the story with the dildo?

The term dildo refers to any accessory designed to penetrate the vagina or anus. If you want to be a little more technical,  dildos are usually accessories designed like a pin and designed for vaginal penetration. A real dildo doesn’t have mechanical or moving parts.

Dildo is the oldest sex toy in the world, according to archaeological studies. The oldest dildo found is attributed to the Paleolithic period. dildos also appear in several works of art from ancient Greece.

Modern dildos are made from a variety of materials, including rubber, glass or plastic. More innovative materials like Cyberskin Mimic the feeling of real skin. A rubber or silicone will be more flexible than other materials. PVC is cheaper but less quality.

You can use a dildo alone or as a couple. Some couples like to use a dildo designed specifically to pleasure the G-spot to enhance their sexual experience.

Dildos are also used by lesbians for strapon or by couples that into pegging . Some models also come with a dual head designed to penetrate each partner simultaneously or for solo play for both holes.

Some people prefer to make a homemade dildo but we can’t recommend it because any substance not made of a single piece can store bacteria that can lead to infection. Don’t save money when it comes to hygiene and health.

Vibrators and vibrating toys

Vibrators are quite similar to dildos, only they have an engine that vibrating or pulsating to increase pleasure. Vibrator Can come in many shapes and sizes, and can be used for penetration, external stimulation or both. Actually, the huge selection of vibrators that are on the market today can be a little daunting.

The vibrator was originally marketed as a medical tool, and was used by doctors to treat “female hysteria”… It was actually marketed as a cure for everything from headaches to weight loss. (Today other things are marketed as wonder solutions.)

In 1902, Hamilton Beach launched the first commercial vibrator. The popularity of TV series such as Sex and the City that introduced the rabbit vibrator helped make the vibrator mainstream in the 1990s.

In fact, one of the most popular types of vibrator – the Magic Wand – was not intended to use as a vibrator but as a massage device. Women started using it for sexual stimulation and today they make models of it specifically for that.

Today, vibrators come in all sizes and shapes with a huge variety of modes and functions. Some come with a remote control, and others can be manipulated even by a mobile app for couples in distance from each other. Some rotate and some also allow for stimulation of the clitoris, and some are more standard and simple.

With such a selection, anyone can find a vibrator to suit their needs, whether they’re going to use it alone or together. Vibrator is a fun and accessible way to spice sex life a little bit.

So what’s better?

There’s no simple answer to that question. Both vibrator and can be used and enjoyed alone or As a couple. What would work best for you? Depends on what feels better for your body and that of your partner. The vibration and pulses of a standard vibrator offer more stimulation than a dildo. On the other hand, a dildo allows the user to feel completely in control while using.

To help you decide, we’ve rounded up some tips to consider while choosing a dildo or vibrator for you:

1. Size does matter

And that’s not necessarily the length. More importantly the thickness/width. A few extra inches of length won’t always add to the fun but sometimes cause discomfort. Thickness on the other hand is always blissed.

There’s an average size ranging in diameter from 2.5 to 5cm so find your ruler and you’ll understand what suits you best.

Note: Consider that each woman or man are different, so an “average size” should only be taken as a rule of thumb only.

The best way is to remember the penises you’ve experienced before and think about what felt best. Thin? Thickness of a can? Something in between?

If you’re not sure, we suggest starting with something skinny as a first sex toy.

And after you figure out how thick, then think about how long.

The diameter and length of most sex toys in our website are listed on our product page on the “More Information” tab.

2. Know Your Orgasm

There’s a reason a rabbit vibrator is the most popular type of vibrator – most women can’t orgasm from penetration alone and also need clitoris stimulation.

If it’s the same for you or your partner, it’s a good idea to make sure you’re buying one. There are also special textured vibrators with dots and ribs for clitoris-stimulation. And don’t forget the Magic Wand or the clitoris-special vibrators designed for external stimulation only and can be perfect for the first time.

3. Shape and Style

No, they don’t just come in the shape of a boring straight pin. Here are some of the types:

  • G-spot toys (they have a curved edge to get there easily)
  • Vibrators(vibrating dildos)
  • Vibration eggs (small egg-shaped vibrators for internal stimulation)
  • Rabbit vibrator (in addition to the main body they have a special attachment for a parallel stimulation of the clitoris)
  • Strapon (not the harness, but the dildo that has a special wide base suitable for the O ring)
  • Strapless strapon (also called double strapon and is like a strapon only without the harness)
  • A duplicate from pornstars (yes you can get an exact replica of your favorite star’s genitals)
  • Two Heads(For Shared Fun)
  • Squirting (it has a tube that fires simulated sperm)
  • DIY (Dildo creation kits from your genitals or from your partner’s)

If you want a sex toy that works with an app, try some of the Je Joue or Ohmibod models.

3. Choose a safe material to use

The regulations in the sex toys market are’nt  as rigorous as you’d expect, so toys that aren’t necessarily healthy for your body are out there.

It is better to stick with safer materials like:

  • Stainless Medical Steel
  • Medical Silicone
  • Borussychlat glass or high-quality puffed glass
  • ABS Plastic

All of these materials are porosity-free and therefore do not store liquids and bacteria, etc. In such cases there is a danger of infection and your toy can even grow mold if not treated properly.

Silicone is known as a smooth and comfortable material. However, it is always a good idea to use it (and all sex toys that designed for penetration) along with a good lubricant.

The type of material can also affect how hard or flexible your toy is, which it affects the feeling it gives. It’s another parameter where different people prefer different things so if you don’t know go for something in between.

4. Base is basic

It’s always a good idea to look at the base (bottom) of the toy.

Some have a clinging base that can be glued to a wall, floor or shower.

If you want an anal toy, it got to have a wide base so it doesn’t get sucked in. No wide base=no anal.

Also, if it’s working on batteries, make sure the lid is sealed enough so they can’t penetrate water.

5. Buy from trusted sites

You don’t need us to tell you which sites are considered less reliable, but if you do, hint, their names are rhyme with elay and a aharon. These two, for example, knowen being overly loaded with misleading advertising about the materials and quality, etc.

Personal example: The writer once bought for his partner love eggs that are allegedly made of 100% silicone… And yet they melted like a popsicle when we got them close to a heat source.

And don’t let us start telling you the horror stories we’ve heard and read about that have sales of used sex toys in them. You don’t have to worry about that if you’re buying from big, well-known brands. In short here are some tips on the subject:

  • If it’s suspiciously cheap, it’s probably bullshit. Don’t be surprised if it stops working after one or two uses.
  • If it’s a well-known brand sold on an unfamiliar site, proceed with caution – you can always contact the manufacturer or importer to verify the legitimacy of the seller.

6. Think about budget

Cheap usually means no quality… But not always.

Expensive usually means quality… But not always.

Ultimately you just have to think about how much money you’re willing to invest in your first sex accessory. It can be a real bummer to spend 200 dollars and end up not liking it.

The good news is, there are a ton of toys at an average price that cost in the 50-75 USD zone.
